The End-of-Life Challenge

Synthetic turf systems consist of multiple components, fiber, backing, infill, shock pad, and base materials, each with different end-of-life pathways. The primary challenge is that these components are difficult to separate at end of life, which limits recycling options and has historically resulted in significant volumes of synthetic turf ending up in landfills.

This is a real limitation of synthetic turf systems that Act Global acknowledges directly. It is also an area of active industry development, recycling infrastructure and technology are improving, and regulatory pressure is accelerating that development in Europe and increasingly in North America.

Current End-of-Life Pathways

Recycling Programs

Several manufacturers and third-party recyclers now offer synthetic turf recycling programs. Fiber can be recycled into products including railroad ties, playground surfaces, and industrial applications. Availability varies significantly by region — North American recycling infrastructure is less developed than European programs.

Crumb Rubber Reclamation

Crumb rubber infill can be separated and reused in other applications, including new synthetic turf installations, playground surfaces, and athletic tracks. Reclamation requires separation from sand and organic infill materials at removal.

Component Reuse

Shock pads in good condition can sometimes be reused in new installations, reducing the volume of material requiring disposal. Assessment by an independent laboratory at removal determines whether pad performance meets specification for reuse.

Landfill Current Reality

Despite growing recycling options, a significant portion of end-of-life synthetic turf currently goes to landfill, particularly in regions without developed recycling infrastructure. This is an honest limitation that field owners should factor into their lifecycle planning and total cost of ownership analysis.
