EPA Evidence Substantiates Turf Safety

An athlete’s time spent training for their sport is comparable to that of a full time job.  Athletes spend hours upon hours in practice; for orientation week in football, 14 hour days are often the norm.  The NLRB estimates that a student athlete will spend 1,750 hours a year performing some sort of practice.  With this many hours dedicated by an athlete, it is important that the playing surface utilized by athletes is safe.

Due to speculations brought up against the health safety of synthetic turf fields, the EPA launch a full-fledged investigation in February of 2016 to test these unfounded claims.  The initiative was aimed at finding any “gaps” in the industry’s knowledge of safety concerns regarding artificial turf products.  However, even after almost a year and a half, all data has shown that “exposure to any chemicals present in recycled rubber is not meaningfully different from exposure to urban or rural soil”.  The EPA’s study is in addition to the 90 other peer-reviewed academic analyses and government reports that have confirmed synthetic turf’s safety as well.

“In short, the only issue left unsettled in the recycled rubber debate is whether the EPA and its fellow agencies will conclude their study in a timely way or at least issue a statement to the public to put a prompt end to today’s uncertainty. Certainly given this recent wave of new science, there are many better uses of taxpayer dollars and the agency’s time.”

At Act Global, we are dedicated to creating sports turf that is of the highest quality for the health and safety of athletes.  We impose strict quality controls and adhere to international standards that are proven to increase quality.

Get Summer Ready With Turfscape

It’s officially the first day of summer 2017 and our headquarters office in Austin, Texas is already facing temperatures in the triple digits! With the sun shining bright and the heat dialing up, it’s more important than ever to be cognitive of your water usage at home.

According to two studies conducted by the American Water Works Association released in 1999 and 2011, water use by single-family residential homes are on the rise- outdoor use especially.  In the study released in 1999, an average annual 84,000 gallons per household were used for outdoor purposes.  In 2011, it rose to 90,300 gallons.  This is over a 7% increase, even after the introduction of high efficiency homes in 2001.  Water use for outdoor applications is significantly higher in the summer months then the rest of the year, averaging 729 gallons per day, per household.  This is equal to showering for 347 minutes.  Of this number, 80%-90% of outdoor water use is dedicated to lawns, gardens, and plants (Hermitte & Mace, 2012).

At Act Global, we worked to engineer a solution to engineer a solution to this excessive water usage.  We believe in the cultivation of a smarter, greener planet-starting at the home.  Our Turfscape line is a high quality, natural-looking artificial grass that is both durable in all weather conditions and versatile in all applications.  Each square foot of regular grass that is replaced with Turfscape saves 55 gallons of water per year- all without the hassle of seasonal maintenance.

So enjoy your summer while helping to make a positive impact on this planet!

Carpell Surfaces donates soccer pitch to Le Centre Voilier

Act Global works with leading Canadian partner to provide synthetic turf to community boys’ home.

Austin, TX- For the boys residing within the Le Voilier community of Saint-Hyacinthe, summer just got a little more fun. A soccer field made of artificial grass, collaboratively donated and installed by Carpell, means endless hours of play for these remarkable kids.

Opening its doors in 2011, Le Centre Voilier is a residential rehabilitation unit (group home) for boys aged 10 to 13 years old. The mission of Le Voilier is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for children and youths for whom it is believed that their security or development may be endangered. Le Voilier is as close as possible to a home and family environment that promote reintegration into society. The Centre also works in close collaboration with teachers and guidance counselors at the local high school to provide the boys with extra support.

“What a magnificent and generous project. Knowing that the boys would enjoy their summer and focus on sports and fun instead of problems touches directly to my heart. On behalf of the boys and myself, our great thanks to Carpell Surfaces” -Suzie Roy, Director, Centre jeunesse de la Montérégie / Youth Centre Foundation.

Act Global manufactured and partnered with Carpell Surfaces to provide the top quality soccer pitch for Le Centre Voilier. Working in cooperation with Go-Élan and GroupeKima, the teams expertly installed the latest turf technology playing field, perfect for child-size recreation. The field was completed May 10th, and immediately the boys were out playing on it.

“It is important for Carpell Surfaces to give back to those in need and these kids are our future! It’s great to see the kids let off steam and channel their energy in to something positive like a soccer game. The Voilier project has been both a pleasure and a privilege for Carpell Surfaces. A big thanks goes to our team of installers, to our partner Act Global, to Go-Elan and GroupeKima for their contributions. Everyone pitched in! ” -Paul Caron, Carpell Surfaces.

Act Global recognizes the positive social impact of sports and was excited to participate in helping create a field for these boys. “We were honored to be given the opportunity to work with our friends at Carpell on this project. These kids are dealing with a lot of challenges in life. We just want these kids to take a break and just be kids” -John Baize, Act Global.

Xtreme Turf, the synthetic turf used for the field, offers a durable and versatile solution that will require little maintenance. This is the same quality range of turf that was used just 30 miles away in the Montreal Olympic Stadium. In the southwestern region of Québec, durability is especially important as the cold temperatures can easily stunt normal grass growth for almost half of the year. The Xtreme Turf line of synthetic turf solves this problem- meaning the children can play year round, for countless hours and no down time on a visually enticing pitch.

Effects of crumb rubber “as negligible as the effect of ingesting grilled foods”

crumb-rubber-black

Dr. Michel D’Hooghe, Chairman of the FIFA Medical Committee, has released a letter regarding possible exposure to crumb rubber in artificial turf fields, rendering the effects negligible.

During a recent FIFA Medical Committee meeting in mid-March, the issue of potential cancer risks from exposure to crumb rubber was heavily deliberated.

The initial issue with crumb rubber emerged after several high-profile articles surfaced, stipulating that there may be a link between the crumb rubber particles known as SBR, or Styrene Butadiene Rubber, and the occurrence of cancer in athletes routinely exposed to these surfaces. Consequently, an open letter about SBR was published.

Based on studies showing little to no correlation between athletes that contracted cancer and SBR, FIFA reiterated its stance on crumb rubber before the Women’s World Cup in 2015, played on an artificial turf field supplied by Act Global and its Canadian partner Carpell.

An increase in coverage of the case for crumb rubber in 2016 prompted the European Chemicals Agency, or ECHA, to issue a statement earlier this year that found “at most, a very low level of concern from exposure to recycled rubber granules.” Previous findings by Van Rooj and Jongeneelen in 2010 concluded that “if there is any exposure, then the uptake is very limited and within the range of uptake of PAH from environmental sources and/or diet.” Additionally, a study from New Jersey’s State Medical School indicated that health risks to children and adults from extensive contact with crumb rubber ranged from negligible to none (Pavilonis et al. 2014).

In the letter, FIFA recognizes that while it will never be possible to disregard the risk or prove it wholly negative, “the newer studies have confirmed the previous findings that there is no evidence of link between contracting cancer and playing on artificial turf with SBR infill.”

As always, FIFA will continue to monitor the developments within the scientific debate on crumb rubber, and will consider any future findings.

New Installation: Arnold O. Beckman High School, Irvine, CA

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0212.JPG

Together with our California partner KYA, Act Global has completed another beautiful synthetic turf installation on the Arnold O. Beckman High School campus.

The first installation at Beckman was completed in 2016. The 272,000 square foot practice field is over 3 football fields in size. Its primary uses are softball, baseball, soccer, football, and men’s & women’s lacrosse. The field system consists of standard regulation crushed rock with CMS tiles on top and 1/2 gauge KYA Championship turf (manufactured by Act Global) with mixed infill.

The newest installation, completed in February 2017, is a 96,928 square foot field with football, soccer and boys’ & girls’ lacrosse. KYA repaired the existing track, then applied a full resurface to bring it back to life. The football field has upgraded irrigation, standard regulation crushed rock with CMS tiles and KYA Premier turf (manufactured by Act Global) with 1/4 gauge stitch and mixed infill.

CMS tiles are an interlocking system that allow high water volumes to pass through and flow underneath, therefore protecting the integrity of the turf and increasing playability during or after rain.

The Beckman fields were installed to provide better playability and more game time on the field, which was a huge factor with their previous natural grass fields.
