Spring has Sprung!

Spring has Sprung!

Bring out the swimsuits, paddle boards, and ice cream trucks! Happy first day of spring! It’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy these next few months. But what does this time of year mean for your spring sports team?

The spring can affect training schedules due to the increase of variable weather and rainfall, resulting in less playing time for your players. Synthetic turf fields mitigate this and allow teams to use the field for more hours of the day and more days of the week due to the decrease in canceled practices, games, and tournaments.

Let’s take a look at the numbers: synthetic turf fields can be utilized for 3,000 hours per year without rest in comparison to natural grass fields which can only be used for approximately 680 hours per year. The fields do not degrade during any season and in result give players a more stable playing surface, especially during the springtime. From a city hosting perspective, this means an increase in revenue as well since tournaments no longer have to be canceled for the conservation of a natural grass field.

So, let’s get down to business. The springtime is full of joy and sports. It is also packed in weather changes and game cancellations. Synthetic turf fields resolve this issue completely and allow the spring to carry on with its assortment of sports. You shouldn’t have to cancel precious training or game time for your team just because Mother Nature doesn’t want to get with the program!

Act Global Wins Sports Installation of the Year Award (Single Field over 75,000 sq. ft.)!

Act Global is honored to have been awarded “Sports Installation of the Year Award (Single Field over 75,000 sq. ft.)” by the Synthetic Turf Council at their 2019 Spring Membership Meeting and Awards Ceremony. The selected winning field is the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, home to the New Orleans Saints for the last 43 years.

On top of its regular season with the Saints, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome hosts seven Super Bowls and the annual college Allstate Sugar Bowl and the R & L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Due to the rigor and performance demands of top pro and college players, the Superdome requires a turf surface that can surpass these high expectations.

Although the state-of-the-art synthetic turf system from Act Global is engineered to withstand years of heavy use, the turf at the Superdome has to be replaced every year to keep up with the fast paced environment. Because the turf is still of high quality, high schools in need across America have the opportunity to enjoy an upgraded turf surface. “On behalf of the Jefferson West School District, I want to thank Act Global, the Superdome, and KTX Sports Construction for putting together this opportunity to provide a top-quality turf field for our students and community.” Pat Happer, the Superintendent of the 2017 field recipient-district, Jefferson West School District.

We’ve been thrilled to provide top quality turf and exceptional workmanship to the Superdome for the 2017 & 2018 seasons and to high schools across the nation. Act Global will continue to implement great systems this year and for years to come.

March Winter Madness: How Cold Weather Effects Natural Grass Fields

March Winter Madness: How Cold Weather Effects Natural Grass Fields

March winter madness has begun! So far, this winter has been quite the chilly one with a few scattered bursts of beautiful weather! Some might say it’s even too cold to be practicing or playing any sort of sport outside. We at Act Global are here to say it’s never too cold for athletes to get their game on with our synthetic turf fields!

Here are some effects that cold weather has on natural grass fields:

Dormancy – Most grass goes dormant in winter. While it may look dead, it is still technically alive and will grow again the following spring – however, the game shouldn’t have to stop just because the grass looks dead and needs time to repair! Synthetic turf fields take away all the maintenance needs of a natural grass field and allow athletes to continue to play competitively and leisurely all year long.

Desiccation – There are times when not all grass will survive, and patches will be scattered throughout a natural grass field. This is known as desiccation which is moisture loss caused by extreme cold. Desiccation is always a possibility because snow and ice enable moisture to reach the roots. This takes even more time and maintenance to fix as grass has to be replaced. Synthetic turf kicks this possibility completely – you’ll never have to worry about desiccation!

Snow Mold Risk – Snow mold is a fungus that affects natural grass fields and lawns under snow cover. While this isn’t much of an issue in some states such as Texas, for those in the Northeast snow mold is a common problem.

Damage and Death – Damage and death is always a possibility. It is strongly recommended to not step on a natural grass field, or even lawn, when there is snow. This is because the pressure from the snow and any added weight can cause permanent damage to the grass. This is especially important if the natural grass field was already weak before the winter months started. This really takes practice time from athletes, causing any potential development to slow down.

Act Global’s turf can withstand extreme weather on both sides of the spectrum. This provides a huge advantage for community and school athletes. Games and practices will no longer have to be canceled due to natural grass maintenance and players can continue to develop their skills. It’s all about the game and player growth at Act Global!
