Ball-Surface Interaction

Ball-Surface Interaction

Every sport that has ever been played was first created on a natural grass field. Today, many of these sports have gone on to be played professionally and casually on synthetic turf fields due to the environmental benefits and heightened performance and safety for the players.

To keep the integrity of the game, Act Global uses a synthetic turf system for every field produced and continues to find a perfect balance between measuring performance and safety. Depending on the sport, different performance factors are considered. By using synthetic turf, you are able to control the performance in a consistent manner through fiber type, fiber height, and infill. Refer to https://bit.ly/2UaRSh5 to find out more about infill.

The Synthetic Turf Council describes ball-surface interaction as this: “Ball-surface interaction describes the performance characteristics of the field that relate to the ways in which the ball reacts to the surface. It is important that the ball perform as close as possible to the optimal performance characteristics for the sport or sports being played on the field. Therefore, measurements of vertical ball rebound, angled ball rebound, and ball roll, are taken to compare against the published standards of the regulatory organization(s) applicable to each sport.”

Act Global continues to take in input for every potential field project along with recommendations for turf systems that will best benefit all athletes.

What is Infill?

What is Infill?

Infill is an important element of any synthetic turf sports field system. For Act Global, this means including infill turf as part of our balancing system. We check for shock absorption vs. vertical deformation, deceleration vs. slip resistance, and make sure it is skin friendly while still maintaining traction. Our engineers recognize that any infill we provide must be up to par for player safety and performance.

Turf is made with two types of infill: a performance and a stabilizer. While we do have sand and rubber available for use, Act Global also provides organic, TPE, EPDM, coated sand, and Clear Choice as alternatives.

Organic infill includes coconut and cork, which can be recycled back into the environment once a field has reached the end of its life.

TPE, or thermoplastic elastomer, is recyclable, non-toxic and heavy metal free.

EPDM, or Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, provides higher stability, is durable and has a great appearance.

Coated sand is low maintenance, provides lower surface temperatures and has proven UV resistance.

Clear Choice is durable, recyclable, and heat-resistant.

The alternative performance infills comply with the most stringent environmental testing and requirements in the market.

Each infill is thoroughly tested to ensure the product is safe, durable, and performs according to top players’ expectations for the long term. Act Global actively strives to develop synthetic solutions selecting the best and most eco-friendly alternative performance infills and shock pads available on the market.  Each system is engineered for high performance and to prevent compaction, but it should be noted that each one does differ by surface temperatures, watering requirements, and appearances.

The type of infill can be selected based on user preference, however, infill ratios are recommended by experts within the synthetic turf manufacturing company based on the field purpose. We make ratios and recommendations based on extensive natural grass benchmark and laboratory testing for each sports surface we create.

Magdeleine School’s Investment in New Synthetic Field Pays Off!

Magdeleine School’s Investment in New Synthetic Field Pays Off!

At the Magdeleine School in La Prairie, Québec, administrators prioritize the success of its students through respect, perseverance, and accountability. It is part of their value system to provide a healthy and safe environment, develop a sense of belonging and to ensure the continuity of every student’s academic progress. A key component of this push for scholarly success is the newly built synthetic football and soccer field and an athletic track for student athletes.

The school’s investment for its students to become better individuals is felt across the community. Those who attend the school along with multiple sports teams from the area can use this new field to engage in team building, employ healthy competition, and increase exercise.

The product used in the creation of this field is Act Global’s Xtreme Turf DX 60 and Stockmeier’s Stobitan SW. Quality, performance and environmental safety is a high priority during testing in order to maximize benefits to players, coaches, communities and more. The surface allows players to start and stop quickly and safely in fast-paced games and shock absorption is maximized to limit vertical deformation. This improves foot stability, prevents ligament stress and reduces overall player fatigue and injury.

Carpell Surfaces and Act Global are honored to have contributed to the future of student athletes of the La Prairie community and the Magdeleine School. We are excited to see how this investment will positively impact the environment and student success and safety.
