John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the primary airport serving the New York City area, and one of the most popular airports in the world. As the single most-frequented gateway into North America for international travelers, the airport currently serves close to 60 million passengers a year.
As one of the busiest airports, JFK hosts takeoffs and landings for some of the largest passenger airplanes- a duty that can be degrading to the infrastructure of the airport. This was especially apparent along infield islands and along runway 13R/31L. This specific runway is the third longest commercial runway in North America and hosts about half of the airport’s inbound and outbound traffic- including A-380 aircraft traffic.
In 2007, AvTurf was contracted by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to install a surface that would control erosion and FOD. With the approaching arrival of a new line of jumbo jets, AvTurf served as an alternative to constant runway closures that were previously necessary to clean up debris blown onto intersecting runways from the airport’s natural groundcover.
