STC Releases Guidelines for Testing Infill in Synthetic Turf Fields

crumb-rubber-blackSeptember 27, 2015 – The Synthetic Turf Council (STC) has released the latest environmental guidelines for testing crumb rubber and other infills used in synthetic turf sports and recreation fields.

The STC selected European Standard EN 71-3, a widely recognized protocol which sets exacting limits for various elements, including heavy metals in children’s toys.

Although the STC does not consider synthetic turf infill as a children’s toy or product, EN 71-3 was adopted to address the safety of items that might be ingested by children. The EN 71-3 model specifies limits for different categories of materials and benchmarks the results against a maximum limit for heavy metals in toys. The purpose of the standard is to minimize children’s exposure to certain potentially toxic elements and to better understand the environmental and toxicological considerations when evaluating the material.

The STC states that if the required testing is performed and guidelines are met, a Certificate of Compliance may be issued by the infill supplier.

U.S. Women Win at Olympic Stadium, Advance to World Cup Final

In an historic match on Act Global Xtreme Turf, the U.S. Women’s Team defeats top-ranked Germany to advance to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 Final.

More than 51,000 fans filled Montreal Olympic Stadium on June 30, to watch football’s top teams face-off in the 2015 Women’s World Cup semifinal.

In front of the tournament’s biggest crowd to date, the US Women beat Germany 2-0, with a penalty kick from Carli Lloyd and late goal from Kelley O’Hara.

The match was played on a FIFA Two Star Certified synthetic turf surface, called Xtreme Turf, supplied by Act Global and Carpell Surfaces. A Two Star pitch exhibits the highest playing performance for professional-level football, benchmarked and tested for qualities such as skin abrasion, traction, ball roll and shock absorption.

Some key USA game stats from ESPN.com include:

  • The United States is now a 70 percent title favorite, according to FiveThirtyEight’s WSPI
  • The U.S. is the first country to reach four Women’s World Cup finals, and can now be the first to win three titles.
  • The United States is now unbeaten in 12 straight games against Germany (7-0-5)
  • The U.S. has five shutouts in a single Women’s World Cup for the first time
  • Hope Solo posted her 10th career Women’s World Cup shutout, tying the record held by Briana Scurry.
  • Carli Lloyd’s 69th-minute penalty kick made her the third American to score in three straight games in a single Women’s World Cup, along with Abby Wambach (both 2003 and 2011) and Michelle Akers (1991).

Team USA will play in the Women’s World Cup Final on July 5, 7 p.m. ET at BC Place in Vancouver. They will face the winner of tonight’s match between England and Japan, the 2011 World Cup champion.
