AvTurf Feature: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is one of the most trafficked airports in the United States with a yearly passenger count exceeding 21 million. The highly-utilized facility features multiple infield islands, so in 2015 HNL updated 63,000 square feet of these areas to AvTurf’s artificial grass system to expand the usage capabilities of its infrastructure.

The use of AvTurf for infield islands helps to create a sterile and static environment by reducing standing water and eliminating airfield contaminants through the filtrating sand infill system. The consistently low pile height allows for easy recognition and cleanup of potential foreign object debris (F.O.D.) and removes shelter for prey based species. The non-fading synthetic turf fibers offer supreme visibility for pilots to quickly distinguish between paved and non-paved areas.

AvTurf combats common threats in airport safety with a durable, attractive, and cost-effective synthetic turf solution that requires minimal year-round maintenance. The performance of AvTurf’s artificial grass has been proven through hundreds of quality assurance tests, each that reiterate the fact that AvTurf achieves the highest performance standards of airport ground safety in all critical areas.

Due to AvTurf’s reputation as a premier safety surface for aviation, and its ability to demonstrate such assertion, it has been successfully installed across the globe to eliminate specific hazards in some of the largest and busiest airports.

AvTurf Feature: Chicago O’Hare International Airport

Chicago O’Hare International Airport is the second busiest airport in North America with almost 77 million annual passengers, a number expected to grow at a rate of 10% in the coming years.

Service roads are used by airport emergency and service vehicles to minimize time spent on airways and taxiways. Within these roadways are no movement zones that are typically covered with natural grass. Maintenance of these grass areas including mowing, weeding and fertilizing require the shutdown of the entire area, thus requiring extensive planning to minimize disruption caused by the closure.

AvTurf is a synthetic turf system that provides comprehensive ground safety enhancements and erosion control. The use of AvTurf for no movement zones in airports eliminates the need for closures, saving both time and money while extending the usage capacity of the airport’s infrastructure. This is extremely important as air travel continues to grow in popularity for both business and leisure.

Due to AvTurf’s reputation as a premier safety surface for aviation, and its ability to demonstrate such assertion, it has been successfully installed across the globe to eliminate specific hazards in some of the largest and busiest airports.

Thank You SMA

We would like to thank the Stadium Managers Association for their efforts to support safe and efficient stadium and ballpark operations.  Since 1974, this group of industry leaders sources critical and relevant information, guidelines, and resources for the betterment of athletic operations.  SMA helps advance the technology and design utilized by stadiums so that both athletes and fans can benefit from an enhanced experience.

This year marked SMA’s 43rd annual seminar, continuing its legacy of bringing together top experts from all sectors of the stadium industry.  The 5-day event from February 4-8 is currently being hosted in Coronado, California.  The keynote speaker, Paul C. Zikopoulos, presented data showing how to use live event analytics to generate revenue and better engage fans.  It is vital for the stadium industry to employ emerging sciences in Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science, and machine learning to create smarter, safer, and more entertainment venues.

Act Global Vice President John Burke attended the seminar both to learn from industry leaders what is sought after in a synthetic turf system and to educate others on the importance of constant R&D into the betterment of artificial grass.  Act Global turf surfaces have more than 100 laboratory tests to verify performance and are benchmarked against top natural grass stadia for football, baseball, and American football.
