AvTurf Feature: Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport

As the main international airport servicing Spain and the largest airport in Europe, Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas (MAD) handled over 53 million passengers and had over 387,000 aircraft movements throughout 2017. With the high volume of people and aircrafts traveling in and out of the airport each day, it is vital that MAD operates efficiently to prevent closures and delays of runways and taxiways. These can be caused by many factors, but typical methods of outdoor operations to control for erosion, FOD, wildlife mitigation, and visual enhancement are not cost effective and require consistent maintenance that can often result in shutdowns.

In 2009 Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport elected to transform its runway and taxiways with the addition of artificial grass from AvTurf. Tested and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), AvTurf is a trusted surfacing solution with proven technology to withstand impact from jet blasts and enhance drainage of runoff water. The synthetic turf system also remains vivid throughout the year, regardless of the weather, to vastly improve visual recognition.

AvTurf has served Madrid–Barajas to advance the airport’s safety and operational effectiveness.

Due to AvTurf’s reputation as a premier safety surface for aviation, and its ability to demonstrate such assertion, it has been successfully installed across the globe in some of the largest and busiest airports.

Field Feature Friday: Sportpark Oranje

Sportpark Oranje is a local Netherlands football facility that hosts gameplay for several teams in the area. Of these, VV Oranje Nassau Roden (ONR) comprises 5 senior teams, 14 youth teams, and 3 G-teams that utilize the fields of Sportpark Oranje. From these teams, a lasting culture of sportsmanship and love for the game has been created at the park. Each player who competes at Sportpark Oranje is driven by the pursuit to develop their own skills, as well as the skills of their peers, and continue to progress the growth of competition in their community.

Our partner, Hofmeier, ensuring Sportpark Oranje’s new field is installed perfectly.

To continue to support the high level of play at the facility, Sportpark Oranje upgraded to an artificial grass pitch manufactured by Act Global. The park selected a sand-dressed synthetic turf system with proven performance to aid in natural football playing characteristics and accommodate the varying needs of players that differ in age and skill level.

This project was possible through the work of our international partner, Hofmeier.  The team is dedicated to providing world-class fields with superior installation and customer service.

International Installation: V.V. Holten

In the 95 years since its founding, V.V. AvTurf Feature: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is one of the most trafficked airports in the United States with a yearly passenger count exceeding 21 million. The highly-utilized facility features multiple infield islands, so in 2015 HNL updated 63,000 square feet of these areas to AvTurf’s artificial grass system to expand the usage capabilities of its infrastructure.

The use of AvTurf for infield islands helps to create a sterile and static environment by reducing standing water and eliminating airfield contaminants through the filtrating sand infill system. The consistently low pile height allows for easy recognition and cleanup of potential foreign object debris (F.O.D.) and removes shelter for prey based species. The non-fading synthetic turf fibers offer supreme visibility for pilots to quickly distinguish between paved and non-paved areas.

AvTurf combats common threats in airport safety with a durable, attractive, and cost-effective synthetic turf solution that requires minimal year-round maintenance. The performance of AvTurf’s artificial grass has been proven through hundreds of quality assurance tests, each that reiterate the fact that AvTurf achieves the highest performance standards of airport ground safety in all critical areas.

Due to AvTurf’s reputation as a premier safety surface for aviation, and its ability to demonstrate such assertion, it has been successfully installed across the globe to eliminate specific hazards in some of the largest and busiest airports.
