Field Feature Friday: Deer Park School

Deer Park is a secondary school located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England.  The Academy-rated institution instills a comprehensive education that includes a broad curriculum and access to elite extra-curricular resources.   Because athletic engagement both supports learning as well as promotes individual interests, Deer Park encourages its students to join one of the many sports teams offered throughout the year in fall, spring, and summer terms.

Deer Park’s professional-quality artificial turf system is even used not only by student-athletes, but also the Cirencester Hockey Club for its fast, flat, and consistent surface.  The Cirencester Hockey Club is a social hockey club that has grown to be one of the largest hockey clubs in South Gloucestershire over the past quarter-century with 8 adult leagues, Vets and mixed teams, and over 250 junior players.  The club allows teams to grow their hockey abilities in a friendly environment and continue to play throughout the sport’s traditional off-season.

The Nine Factors Leading to a Safe and Efficient Airport Runway

  1. A Clean Runway

Foreign Object Debris (FOD) are an object, particle, substance, debris or agent that is not where it is supposed to be and can lead to a hazardous situation to the aircraft itself, personnel on site, or a safety delay.  Common airport debris includes aircraft parts, tire fragments, mechanics’ tools, nails, luggage parts, broken pavement, and stones.

  1. A Stable Runway

Powerful jet blasts can cause erosion in runway and taxiway shoulders.  It is vital to have a surface that can withstand this phenomenon and provide a stable area for incoming and outgoing aircraft that is free of rutting.

  1. A Strong Runway

A380 movement areas require detailed planning to accommodate the extra-large wingspan and route of these airliners.  The infrastructure of any airport’s A380 movement areas must be exceptionally durable and extend and stabilize runway and taxiway shoulders to prevent erosion and FOD from jet wash.

  1. A High-Visibility Runway

Infield islands and decommissioned high-speed exits or taxiways with high visibility markings can help prevent pilots from inadvertently landing on wide taxiways, further preventing delays and hazards.

  1. An Incursion-less Runway

Airplanes are constantly landing and taking off throughout the day at any airport. Because of this, personnel and equipment can find themselves within or around runway/taxiway safety areas.   This is a situation that can lead to both incursions and vehicle/pedestrian deviations (VPD’s).

  1. A Secure Runway

In the event of an urgent situation, emergency response equipment needs a fastened and stable surface to ensure the quickest response times possible to airport incidents.

Different elements of traditional airport ground coverings can create an environment rich in food, water, and shelter for birds.  Bird strikes are a dangerous phenomenon that has been calculated to cost the aviation industry $1.2 billion USD each year.

Standing water in airside areas of airports can lead to early deterioration of runway pavement and hazardous landing/taking off situations for pilots.  Both surface runoff and subsurface flow are important to properly drain.

Just as traditional airport ground coverings can lead to an environment that is attractive to birds, they can also lead to a habitat for burrowing species.  This is an unsafe situation for both the airliners as well as the animals themselves.

Countdown to Super Bowl LII

The two-week countdown to Super Bowl LII is officially underway! Yesterday four teams competed in the championship-bound round which led to the New England Patriot’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Philadelphia Eagle’s win over the Minnesota Vikings. Now both teams have a bye week to train and prepare before heading to U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

New England is a powerhouse that has made regular appearances at the Super Bowl, making them the favorite of predictions from multiple sources.  A win on February 4 by the Patriots would make the team the first back-to-back champion since 2003-2004, a record they themselves set.  However, the Philadephia Eagles have proved themselves as a successful underdog throughout playoffs, even using the status as a motivator and joke with their fans.  Philadelphia has pulled off repeat upsets over its past two opponents, making the team a serious competitor against New England.  The most current prediction from Bleacher Report has the final score at New England 37, Philadelphia 30.

Improvements to Masich Place Stadium

Located in the beautiful urban wilderness of Prince George, British Columbia lies the historic venue of track and field at the 1990 BC Summer Games.  Masich Place Stadium is also home to the Prince George track and field club and serves as a training ground for athletes.  In an effort by the city to revitalize the facility and boost sports tourism, the re-development program includes improvements that will allow Masich Place Stadium to be a competitive capital for both provincial and national events.  In addition to exterior enhancements such as the painting of the grandstand structure and new landscaping, the stadium now features a new synthetic turf, multipurpose field.

“It will help ensure Prince George continues to have first-rate sporting facilities that make it an attractive place to live,” said Janine North, CEO, Northern Development.

Two Chile Stadiums Select Act Global Turf

Act Global recently had the opportunity to manufacture three soccer pitches in Santiago and Curico, Chile.

The new synthetic turf field for ANFA (Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Amateur) Luis Hernan Alvarez Stadium is part of an improvement project to upgrade the quality of amateur soccer facilities.  The professional-quality pitch was part of the final phase of the project, meaning soon athletes will have access to the stadium’s top quality amenities, including Act Global’s artificial grass.
