Synthetic turf is a cost-effective alternative to natural grass that usually pays for itself within 3-4 years in part due to reduced maintenance and care requirements. By eliminating the need for consistent mowing, irrigation, chemical treatments, artificial grass gives players the opportunity to spend more time on the field. While much less time and money are necessary for the upkeep of synthetic turf fields, there are techniques we recommend to maximize playability and the life of the field.
Sweeping is a maintenance term that involves cleaning and grooming synthetic turf fields. This recommended procedure should be completed on a regular basis by trained personnel to keep players as safe as possible. Over time, natural debris can collect on a field and pose a risk to athletes. Part of

Located on the outskirts of Toronto on the edge of Lake Ontario is a large and up-and-coming city. Mississauga is an extremely active community in a variety of sports and activities, so its necessary for the city to provide amenities that support this lifestyle.

Last year Mississauga elected to install two multi-use artificial grass fields within a local park. The high-performance synthetic turf fields are located at Iceland Park, a state of the art facility that offers many sports and recreational amenities for the area. Both fields sit within the 160-acre park with vibrant markings for any sports team to train. The fields are made entirely of professional-grade synthetic turf, the same turf seen in stadiums across the world.
Almost a year after installation, our partners captured aerial imagery of the fields that are still looking vibrant and plush. The Xtreme Turf fields completed with EcoFill from Mondo and ProPlay underlay from Schmitz Foam was installed by Carpell Surfaces. Carpell Surfaces is a leading supplier and installer of synthetic sports surfaces across Canada. The company has an excellent reputation for top-quality installations in sports facilities at major universities, colleges and schools, as well as high-profile sporting events.

Athletes are constantly jumping, stopping, and switching direction. This repetitive impact with the ground has the potential to have multifaceted effects on an individual’s body- especially over years of training. These effects are exacerbated further by playing surfaces that are too hard, soft, or uneven. The most common injuries of athletes including fractures (18%), sprains (33%), bruises and abrasions (16%), and internal organ injuries and concussions (12%) each can be related back to fatigue- a natural result of training on irregular surfaces.
Shock absorbency can be related to the hardness of a surface and how well it is able to convert kinetic energy from an athlete to another form within the ground. If a training field does not provide proper shock absorbancy, the energy will stay within the athlete’s body and can destabilize joint and ligaments upon each impact with the ground. However, there must be a balance between a groundcover’s ability to absorb stress and shock and its resistance to vertical deformation. When a field “gives in” upon impact, a person’s natural foot stability can be thrown off. The harmony between both these critical factors is significant to the safety and performance of athletes.
Act Global understands the need for player safety and uses extensive research-backed engineering and natural grass benchmark testing to develop artificial grass surfaces that address this. The growth in synthetic turf gives schools, facilities, and communities a unique opportunity to select a field that is superior to traditional surfaces by using scientific advancements. The iconic Birds Next Stadium was designed and built as the main hub for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The large, open roof stadium has since become a venue used for high-profile events and as a tourist attraction. BNS remains a landmark that continues to draw in people from across the world for both the sight and for events.
Currently, outside the stadium, the management team is testing a pilot field crafted from Xtreme Grass. Inside Birds Nest is a traditional grass field that is both difficult and expensive to maintain and faces wear from the multitude of games and attractions hosted within the stadium. After the test field proves to be successful, the pitch inside the stadium will be resurfaced with the reinforced strength of Xtreme Grass. Xtreme Grass offers up to 30% more playing hours compared to natural grass alone and promotes faster, thicker growth of the grass blades.
Stay tuned for updates on Birds Nest Stadium!
